एक खूबसूरत गांव था। चारों ओर पहाड़ियों से घिरा हुआ। पहाड़ी के पीछे एक शेर रहता था। जब भी वह ऊंचाई पर चढ़कर गरजता था तो गांव वाले डर के मारे कांपने लगते थे । कड़ाके की ठंड का समय था। सारी दुनिया बर्फ से ढंकी हुई थी। शेर बहुत भूखा था। उसने कई दिनों से कुछ नहीं खाया था। शिकार के लिए वह नीचे उतरा और गांव में घुस गया। वह शिकार की ताक में घूम रहा था। दूर से उसे एक झोपड़ी दिखाई दी। खिड़की में से टिमटिमाते दिए की रोशनी बाहर आ रही थी। शेर ने सोचा यहां कुछ न कुछ खाने को जरूर मिल जाएगा। वह खिड़की के नीचे बैठ गया। झोपड़ी के अंदर से बच्चे के रोने की आवाज आई। ऊं...आं... ऊं...आं..। वह लगातार रोता जा रहा था। शेर इधर-उधर देखकर मकान में घुसने ही वाला था कि उसे औरत की आवाज आई- 'चुप रहे बेटा। देखो लोमड़ी आ रही है। बाप रे, कितनी बड़ी लोमड़ी है? कितना बड़ा मुंह है इसका। कितना डर लगता है उसको देखकर।' लेकिन बच्चे ने रोना बंद नहीं किया। मां ने फिर कहा- 'वह देखो, भालू आ गया... भालू खिड़की के बाहर बैठा है। बंद करो रोना नहीं तो भालू अंदर आ जाएग ा', लेकिन बच्चे का रोना जारी रहा। उसे डराने का कोई असर नहीं पड़ा। ...
