One of the main questions a lot of people ask me (and themselves) is, “what can I freelance as?”
You know that you want to earn some extra money, or perhaps be your own boss and work whenever you like. But what’s that work going to be?
That’s something you need to think about… seriously.
You see, in the international markets, there’s a market for almost everything. People are getting rich selling pet rocks to others, while others are busy making millions off bathwater.
So, no matter how crazy or silly, you are almost always likely to find a person who will be willing to throw their hard-earned cash on you.
For whatever reason.
Anyhow, so, that brings us to the million-dollar question – what can you freelance as?
Now, I am not going to go ahead and simply give you a list of things that you can do online. That’s just stupid and unoriginal. But what I WILL do is focus on helping you understand what you are possibly GOOD at.
Because, you know – passion doesn’t always make money, but skills certainly do. If you are good at something, then you will make money with it, regardless of whether you like it or not.
When I was starting out my freelancing career in 2016, I couldn’t help but wonder – what GOOD am I?
I mean, you are bound to fall into depression when you keep getting rejected by just about every company. I used to get rejected for jobs that would pay some 15,000 rupees per month.
It’s very depressing. I still have a whole inbox filled with rejection e-mails. And whenever I want to feel grateful, I just go back and look at them to know how far I have come.
So, I took the reverse approach to determining what I could freelance as. And I started off by listing what I was NOT good at. Look at the list below –
- Sucked at programming – so no web development or app development for me
- Found Adobe illustrator too complicated – so no graphic designing
- Had no idea how to hold a pencil – so no art and animation
- Had a low-spec computer – no videography or rendering
- Didn’t have 6-pack abs – so no fitness coaching
- Wasn’t successful back then – so no motivational speaking
- Could write error-free English – so freelance content writing was an option
(The actual list is a bit longer, but I will save you the trouble.)
Aha! Freelance content writing it is, then!
And that’s what I began freelancing with. From there on, I was absolutely good at nothing else, so I picked up quickly as a freelance writer, and today, well – here I am.
You see, we are very good at remembering what we are bad at, so you might as well use that to your advantage to figure out what you are NOT BAD at.
So, if you are wondering what you can freelance as, start by listing what you CAN’T freelance as. By the way, you don’t have to be an expert about your field, just make sure you know how to get started.
Anyhow, the next article would be on helping you develop a portfolio that demonstrates your experience.
